[Mus. 77.4] Cantus hebraicus
Call Number: Birnbaum Collection Mus. 77.4
Attribution: Clajus, Johannes.
Place: Königsberg
Date: Late 19th Century or early 20th Century.
Physical Description: 2 folios; x cm ; manuscript.
Subject: Extramusical material, choral music
Description:
Part of a subcollection on Neginoth or te’amim that Birnbaum had numbered “Mus. 77.” Some of these items in this subcollection have been long missing, including in a note as of 1979, when Israel Adler was working on collection. As Adler notes, these items are “probably located in other parts of the collection, such as Arch II 40 H.”
Copied from a manuscript by Johannes Clajus of which Birnbaum found in the Königsberg royal library. Music is in old-style notation (neume) on five lines, moving from right to left. Hebrew printing text underlay. Manuscript also contains musicological work in latin that appears to have been copied verbatim from the Clajus manuscript in Birnbaum’s hand.
Amusingly, a middle page of this manuscript also contains a number of doodles (by Birnbaum?) of mustachioed men.
